And people wonder what happens when possession of firearms is controlled
Queensland Police find 'military-style weapons' during Monto farm raid - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

What I find interesting is the quantity of ammunition, sufficient for a small war, and I wonder since this is a nation where such weapons are illegal and have been for some time, how and when were they obtained?

We have insufficient detail as to the affiliations of these individuals, whether bikies, or islamist extremist, or Jugoslavian or just plain anarchist but their presence is a wake up call for great policing of imports and firearm possession.

328 weapons Tom most of them beyond anything an ordinary citizen would need. I'm not shocked, but I am concerned at this level of lawlessness

Here the illegal guns are the biggest problem too. So of course the government's answer is to crack down on legal gun ownership .

Yes Tom you see we have already removed that confusion, if you possess these weapons you are outside the law. For us it isn't a question of rights but protection of the population. but we have to ask the question, where did these weapons come from? These are in some instances fully automatic weapons, military weapons?

You possess a number of gun manufacturers where your weapons can be sourced, we do not, only one of our manufacturers remains in operation. You have a highly sophisticated market for weapons in operation, we do not

Looks like a Black Market operation. Most of what they have shown is legal in the U.S. but some like the fully automatic ones require special handling by way of permits.

The surprising part is how much ammo they had.

Yes indeed it was surprising and handled like an ammunition dump.

There are no permits for such weapons here, they cannot be legally imported, so it is also surprising that they have been imported in quantity. This is the sort of cache you would build up it you were planning a revolution and yet there is no reason for that here

Judging from the smattering of weapons found to me it doesnt look like a paramilitary operation. But as you have said in the past about people showing up in the night and those seeking out your country by illegal means (like boat people) these weapons may have been coming over with them as payment for passage.

It is only a theory at a glance. There appeared to be quite a mix rather then any single line of weapons. The thing your country is going to have to wrestle with is the question of this being an isolated incidence or is this more prevalent then you had assumed.

From time to time caches of weapons, and illegal private collections, have been found but this is far more extensive than most. Highly unlikely these came with boat people as those boats are intercepted and destroyed and the boat people go into detention. We don't have the same border issues as might be found in the US, but we cannot rule out clandestine landing of both weapons and drugs by smugglers. I would say it is more prevalent than we had assumed and more sophisticated. The fact that it has been found in a remote area is telling. This is a vast land with a huge coastline.
