How can anyone think this is embezzlement?
I worked for a quasi government agency in CO as the director and I also intermittently did all the accounting work. I left the job after months of hell and accusations that I had misapproprated funds. Anything I bought from the company was paid for... mostly in cash, and board presidents provided clarification when I had payroll or comp plan questions. (I also did payroll.) We had annual audits and quarterly reviews by a different accountant. The board approved financials each month at their meetings and all audits and quarterly reviews came back clean while I was there.

They are publicly releasing an internal audit report at their next board meeting and I am freaking out that they are going to say negative things about me (because they are trying to get out of paying my severance pay) and possibly try to file charges for misappropriation of public funds. I've agreed to answer any questions they have about the finances, but they haven't asked me anything yet. Am I just worrying about nothing or because I don't have a "paper trail" for some things that were approved by the board president or paid for with cash, do I have something to worry about?

Every penny spent in a public agency has to have a paper trail. If I go to the store and buy a 50 cent package of tape, there is a receipt. Next no almost no company pays for most things with cash, they use checks, charge accounts or store accounts. So if you did most things with cash, yes I can understand why they are suspect.

If you can not account for, if there is not proof of every penny paid out by a receipt, yes they may come back to you about it.

Next without an attorney, I would not answer any of their questions.

I don't think I explained this properly. Every bill from the company was paid by check or credit card. Cash only entered the picture if I personally bought something from the organization... like sending a fax or buying a postage stamp.

Is this something like a POA, property owners association? The report isn't out yet so hold off on freaking and see what it says. If they make a public statement which is untrue, damages you then sue them for damages.
