Depends on the felony charge and which branch interests you.

The military is desperate for warm bodies. Go in and apply and see what a recruiter can do for you. Lots of times they can "bend" the rules if you're smart enough.

    Hello t:

A felon cannot possess a firearm. You can't be a soldier if you can't shoot.

As the Excon said... Since you are a felon you are prohibited from possessing a firearm. Since the Army requires their recruits to not only possess a firearm, but also to be proficient at shooting you will not be able to join the army, or any other branch of the military.

You guys need to look up the Future Soldier Program where the military takes felons straight from prison into training. They also did it during Viet Nam where the felon had his choice of serving his country or spending time in prison.

Like I said earlier go in and speak with a Recruiter. So long as you have a HS diploma or GED you're in. Let them worry about the felon part.

Can you provide the link please? My son had a misdemeanor prior to the age of 18 and had a VERY hard time getting in.

    Hi twink:

It sounds familiar, but I'd like to know more, too. My reason is self interest, though. If the federal government overlooks felonies in ONE instance, I'd certainly have an argument to use when/if they arrest ME for a gun - not that I'd ever own one, of course.

You have to be in prison first. It also depends on where you are in this country as well. A friend of mine who was in Iraq recently complained about all the exprisoners who were on his squad. And these guys weren't angels either. They went into this program with more than a misdemeanor. Such as theft, robbery and car jacking and a few were exgang members. Maybe you son's recruiter was just giving him a hard time.

If this program doesn't exist in your area it does not mean that it does not exist. There are times when the Army is truly desperate for warm bodies and then other times they could care less as there are "good" men applying to join. When they get down to the nub and want to inflate their numbers they happily go shopping in the prisons. LA sent a lot of their own to Iraq this way.

Of course, not that you'd ever own one.

And if the government overlooks felonies this means you CAN join the military, something you've always wanted to do. Send me a postcard. Better yet, call me when you're on R&R someplace really nice.
