Florida law on SOL of theft

    Felonies
Theft and forgery cases are typically third-degree felonies and have a statute of limitations of three years from the date the crime is committed. If the theft or forgery was committed in violation of securities laws, the statue of limitation is five years. If the theft or forgery was committed while the person held public office, the statute of limitations is two years from the time the person left office or the maximum of the standard limitation, whichever is longer.

    Misdemeanor
Theft can sometimes be considered a misdemeanor crime called petit theft. For example, shoplifting typically falls under petit theft. Misdemeanor theft has a statute of limitation of one year after the crime was committed.

    Extension
Florida law allows for an extension of the statute of limitations for any time when the suspect was continually absent from the state. This extension can increase the statute of limitation up to a maximum of three years.
