Windows xp will not start up
    Help!

My computer will not let me log-on.
When I switch it on, it goes to the welcome page where I type in my password. After pressing "enter" it says "loading your personal settings" then immediately says "logging-off" and flicks back to the "welcome" page.

    Please can anyone help me?

Is a work computer on a corporate network? Stand-alone home computers don't display the "loading your personal settings" screen.

Stand alone computers can very well in fact state "loading your personal settings". I am using WinXP with SP3 and get that every time I boot my computer.

I've seen this a few times before and it was always a virus or malware. Do you have an Anti-Virus program running, and if so, is it up to date? I would recommend booting up into safe mode and running a full scan. It would be nice if you had a program also like "Spybot search and Destroy", but if you don't already have a spyware/malware scanner, it will obviously be difficult for you to get one if you can't log on to your computer via regular mode.

Here is an example of another user who had the same issue:

If you have other user accounts you could also try logging into those. Or when you boot into safe mode, if you still can't log into your account, "Administrator" should show up.

That's something you could try too. When you go to log in regularly, you could try pressing "Control+Alt+Del" and type "Administrator" into the username box. However, this only works if you either didn't setup a password for admin when you first setup your computer, or you can remember your password.

Is a few days old but would suggest a repair installation
    Repair Installation
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

    Perform a Repair Installation
