Could any body tell me how to reload windows: while trying to load driver from operating disk I had a problem and lost all my files due to damage on disk, know have new disk, but when I switch on computer I automatically go on to page showing options such as safe mode, command prompt etc.I have tried to enter safe mode but the unit will not allow me. Have I killed my daughters computer or can anybody help me to redeem myself to her. :confused: :confused: :mad: :mad:

Well, I think you should just forget about windows 98. Installing win 98 is a lot of touble, like installing the sound drivers, display drivers, modem drivers, etc... I say that you install win xp. You will not have to install ANY drivers because win xp installs them automatically. Of course your computer will have to meet the winxp requirements, they are not that much. Just have aabout 2 gb of hard drive, about the ram, I think you can have 128 mb ram, my computer has 184 because I added more, but 128 should work, and processor speed should be around 500 mhz, the more mhz you got the BETTER!! So just install winxp, its more easy to use and to watch videos on that, its amazing, well it depends on what vga card you got. JUST INSTALL WIN XP

Heh... not in my experience. WinXP has detected my video card correctly only about 75% of the time. Same story with sound cards.

And installing video drivers on winxp is a PITA...

JUST INSTALL WIN XP

Win XP is indeed much better than win98, however:

Win XP is $200.
Too much.

Where the info is complete and easy to follow.Excellent advice for those who wish to 'mess' after install.The answers do come up in a large pop-up window,but I have no problems with it,as I use Firefox anyway.

That has nothing to do with this 'discussion',except to say it's the best browser.As if you did'nt know anyway.

Not installing drivers on your 'own' is a bit dodgy though,player21.XP often needs a helping hand in my experience.

Incidentally.I wonder what the lowest 'spec' is for a PC running XP?

I'd be interested to know.Honest answers please.As if anyone would tell a lie on this forum :D

Here's my experience:

450Mhz Pentium II, 128 MB RAM: XP runs fine, response time is satisfactory

350Mhz AMD-K62, 128MB RAM: XP quite slow, terrible response time, very long bootup

Don't buy the windows xp cd from big stores like circuit city, staples, office max, etc... get the cd from a person, tell him to burn you one or give you one. He/she will not make the price $200, he/she should give for about $50. That is very cheap. I got my cd from my country so I got it wayyyyyyy cheap!!

Excellent idea.Dont buy a copy,get a friend to 'clone' you one.Then when you activate it over the net,you get an error message.The code has already been registered on Microsoft security servers.Still,you could always search the net and get a 'hacked' code.Nothing wrong there??

Hi,
When you say you have a new disc, do you mean a new Win98/98SE install CD?
If so, place the CD in your CD-ROM drive.
Then, turn off the computer.
Turn on the computer, and when it comes up to "Boot to CD-ROM" or "Boot to Harddrive", choose "Boot to CD-ROM".

You can then install windows 98.

IF the above doesn't show you a choice, you have to make a floppy boot disk.
Please post back if you need steps on how to do this, using another computer and your Win98/98SE install CD.

First of all, I installed win xp on 2 to 3 computers with my cd. The serial number has no problem. It works fine!! And second of all, you don't have to activate it over the net. Get win xp service pack 1, and install that. Then download service pack 2. or if you can get service pack 2 on a cd, just install it from the cd. I'm just telling u, win xp is wayyy better then 98!!

Later this year Microsoft will require customers to verify that their copy of Windows,be it 98,98SE,ME,Win 2000,and XP are genuine copies.

Starting February 7th for China,Norway,and the Czech Republic,it will be worldwide by late summer.This will also include OS updates,add-on's,and security patches.

This has been implemented in order for Microsoft to crack down on pirate copies of it's software.

People can crack the win xp, and use it without a serial. Microsoft can't stop illegal copies of xp cd's in any other country other then the one they are in. its true that the law states that you can't copy copyrite cds, but the law is only for usa. I don't want to start a fight about this OK. U got your system fixed, that's good.

Heh... copyright law may only take affect in some countries, but certainly more than just one.

Yes, you _can_ get around microsoft's "activation" process with very little stress. But that isn't the point...

I don't care if the software you run is "legit" or not. But please don't tell other people that it is legal to copy software under microsoft's draconian EULA, especially as you are unsure exactly what laws operate in the country said people reside in.

If you're going to commit copyright infringement, at least acknowlegdge it _is_ copyright infringement...

No,I don't work for them,and I'm not a big fan.Give me Linux or an IMac any day.But pirated software eventually effects us all.More security measures,more patches to install,more money to spend!

Before you say rubbish.From late summer,all of us with genuine Microsoft products,have to 'prove' to Redmond that we own genuine copies.It's having to do that which makes me mad. :(

I don't want this discussion to become silly. I would care less of what UK will do because I don't live in UK, I would only care of what they do if I were a resident of UK.

May I suggest that it is none of your concern on what country I am from or I live in. and yes, I mean software, I think of all cds who carry within it a program of some kind as a software cd.
