What is that "Slamming Door" sound I hear?
I've had my current Dell PC for 2 yrs. About twice a month, I hear a very distinct, clear sound of a door slamming shut. (door latch, creaking of the door, then it slams shut). This happens, to an untrained eye like mine, at all times -- on the net/off the net; programs running/no prog's running. I belong to no network/workgroup. This is the only PC in my home. I run McAfee firewall & internet security--this isn't one of the 'alert noises' it makes.
Can someone out there please tell me what this is; or who is sneaking off my PC? Thank you for your time. Nise 5280

Is there a program running? These don't sounds like typical PC sounds. Could it be a screen saver? Does it only occur when the computer has gone into its screen saver mode? That's my thought, anyway.

To check the screen saver theory, right-click on an empty space on the "desktop" and select "Properties". Select the "Screen Saver" tab. About halfway down on the page, there will be a box labeled "Screen Saver". Select "Blank" or something equally innocuous. The "Wait" should be set to 10 minutes or something like that. You can set it to less than that to test. Click the OK button at the bottom. Then wait and see whether the sounds go away.

You can also do a search for *.wav and when you get results, play each one by one till you hear this sound - and then you can maybe find out what folder it is in and what it is associated with.

May take a long time depending on how many wav files you have

If you try this, hopefully the name of the file might give it away

There was a screen saver that made a door slamming noise... Don't remember what version of windows it was though, it may have even been with Microsoft Plus. It was something of a Haunted House... might have been called "Mysterious" or something similar.

Do you have any instant message clients installed? They sometimes use that sound to notify you that someone went offline.

My Dell computer shares a similarity. I don't use any messaging software neither do I have any stored on my laptop. Often I hear the odd door slamming in the background whilst surfing the net. I have an up-to-date virus package that does its job well but what I suspect is that it is a DELL program (unsure for what) - I have just reformatted it, a clean slate now. I will try to attempt to see what it is if I navy through my activity log (something that will take me some time to find I imagine). However, disconnecting from the internet will do the job.
