    Are you referring to the system clock or another part of the motherboard.
    If so I haven't heard it referred to as a crystal before.

    You mean the clock generator? It is an integrated circuit that generates the clock timing for the CPU, so its not really a crystal.

    If you talking about micro-controllers, sucn as PICs and ATMELs, the a "crystal" would be applicable for generating the clock timings the microcontroller needs to execute the program instructions.

    I guess you are talking about the clock, a microchip that controls the timing and the speed of all the compuer's functions. That chip includes a crystal which vibrates at a certain frequency when electricity is applied to it.
