I've been reading online about the differences between Standby and Hibernate, and have a partial understanding, but need some clarification.

1) Is there a difference between Sleep (on my keyboard), and Standby on "Shut Down" screen? From my reading, they seem to be the same.

2) I just started using Rebit back up software (which I really like). I used to use my Sleep button all the time for short departures (a few hours), so I wouldn't have to close all the files I was working on.

But I have learned that I cannot use sleep with my Rebit back up software, as it causes errors and corrupts files. So I was wondering if I might be able to use Hibernate?

Does Hibernate go through some sort of shut down of processes that would safely disable my back up drive/software for a safe "shut down"?

What exactly are you worried about happening? The reason Im asking is because if your afraid of online threats then just turn off the connection and leave the machine on. So your back up software can do its work.

No, actually I'm not worried about online threats.

Sometimes if I'm working on a project, I would put my PC to sleep over night. I just don't see any reason to leave it running for periods of non-use. I also know that there are several reasons to avoid excessive power cycling of electronics, but that is not my question.

I just want a better understanding of these 2 (or 3) modes so I have options.

In standby mode your computer sits at the ready. In hibernate mode it saves your work to the hard disk before shutting off vitals like memory. In stanby mode you could lose work due to a power interuption. In hibernate that work is saved.

Both take you back to where you were before turning it off (making either selection)

1)Sleep and standby are almost the same. Where the confusion comes in is when you have a different OS. In Vista for example sleep can turn to hibernate after a few hours of non use. Where in XP it doesn't do that.

2) yes and no. WIll it be safe yes but will it interrupt your software from doing its job? Yes it can interrupt it. Its trying to go into a minimal mode. So the back up software may conflict with it because its trying to use a disk drive that has now disappeared.
