    Computer reboots for no reason
Could someone help me with this problem. I am running XP that has all of the updates from MicroSoft. For no reason it will shut down and reboot while I'm looking at things on the net or reading the AJC paper on-line. I have NOD32 virus protection and ewido 3.5 mal-ware protection. I just totally erased my hard drive a month ago. This is really weird and sometimes I will get an error from Internet Explorer asking me to send them an error report. This just kicks me out of what I was doing. Does anyone have any advise.

    Thanks
    Mark

Has this problem been happennig long? Also does this only happen when you are connected to the internet?

First thing I would try is a System Restore.

Click on Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore. Follow the instructions on the screen and take the PC to a point say a week back (or longer if the problem occurred some time ago). This won't delete any of your programs, data etc. so don't worry about that.

Yes - I thought I had a virus or something so I wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled all of my programs back on it. It will randomly shut down and reboot for no reason. Could it be a hardware issue? I was using V-Com System Suite but now I have Zone Alarm, Ewido, and Nod32. I purchased this gateway about 3 years ago and replaced the hard drive around 1 year ago. Any sugguestions would be appreciated.

    Hi, Mark,
Is your warranty still good with Gateway? Maybe a call to them could help find the issue.
I also have a Gateway, and after the first 2 yrs, had to replace the hard drive under warranty.
The computer's re-booting could be a result of many different things.
Possibly the CPU, bad memory module, overheating, just to name a few, and the motherboard going bad sometimes causes this.
Hopefully, it won't be any of the above.
The error from IE, asking to send an error report, can be solved, sometimes, by reinstalling IE. If you wish to do that, then go to Start/find or search, then type in ie6setup.exe.
Left double-click on it to start the Installation Wizard. When you get to 2 choices, choose the Custom installation, click Next.
Then, Scroll down to Internet Explorer, and put a checkmark next to it, Click on Next. When it asks to reinstall, tell it Yes, and keep going.
Re-boot, and maybe it will stop the "error sending" pop-ups.
I do wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for the quick reply - Unfortunately I only had a one year warranty and had to fight with them about replacing my CD/RW drive. My hard drive crashed after the second year and was not covered. I will reload Internet Explorer and let you know how it does. This is really aggrevating when it reboots for no reason. I think I will also remove the cover and look to make sure both fans and working properly. If you can think of any other thing I might could check please advise.

    Thanks
    MArk
