Obviously the O.P. doesn't have any anti-virus he clearly states that he can't download anything to get rid of the so called virus.

First off, is your computer fast other then freezing during downloads? Because this doesn't sound like a virus, maybe its whatever you're trying to download that is causing this. It's easy to assume that every PC fault is due to a virus made by someone else but the fact is it's poor PC maintenance. All I have to go off is your PC freezes during a download of "things". What are you trying to download, what is your PC specs, what does it do exactly besides just freeze, does it come up as non-responsive or does your PC actually freeze all together? Any recent PC changes whether it's software or hardware? How long has this been doing it?

Here's some advice. You should have an anti-virus on your PC at all times, waiting until you think you have a virus is completely superfluous and just plain dumb.

    Waiting for response,

If you are downloading a file from a link while in your browser, then you could have an issue with an add-on in your browser. Like mpolo said, try Mozilla Firefox as your internet browser program. It is more stable and a bit safer than Internet Explorer.

Do you have any Download accelerators or other Download programs? Try uninstalling them and see if that solves your problem.

There could be any quirk causing you the problem, but you would have to describe what happens when you click on a download link, how long after you click on it does the freeze occur, does the download start at all or it freezes afterwards? What kind of file does it freeze on or does it freeze if any file is being downloaded, or attempted to be downloaded?

Try starting your computer in VGA mode (at boot, press F8 before Windows starts loading). If no problems, than you need to update you graphics card drivers.

If you have a portable flash drive/stick, have a friend download the anti-virus programs for you. Many antivirus sites also have emergency boot disks that your friend can download, burn to a CD. Boot your computer with the emergency cd and scan while not in Windows. That's one of the ways to scan for viruses without risking infecting your computer further, if you do have one.
