I spoke with Gateway and they said I have to renew my whole system. Right now I am trying to save my pictures to disc. I am stuck in safe mode and Gateway said that shows that I have a real problem if rebooting doesn't get me out of safemode

I would agree, but in Safe Mode you may be able to burn your pic and other data to CD. Then use the Recovery CD to restore to factory settings.

With Gateway, you should be alerted to press F11 to enter recovery. It only gives you about 4 seconds to do it, but you still need the Recovery CD. I just tried a recovery on a friend's Gateway WITH the CD and it was a mess!
I wound up wit a boot.ini error and had to rebuild the bootconfig with my own XP CD from my Dell, which worked.
The other problem is that even with the Recovery CD, NONE of the device drivers were on the disk. Had to use my laptop and flash drive to d-load and transfer what was needed.
My suggestion is to delete the recovery partition while in Safe Mode... get hold of an OEM copy of XP and do a complete format and reinstall.
You will get the basic drivers to rebuild your system the way it stands now.

Let me know if this helps...

Please try to boot the computer in the safe mode and then, scan with the anti virus and anti spyware tool.
After that you can try uninstall the programs and delete all the junk files (temp, %temp%, prefetch) from start > run > tpye temp... and delete all the temp files and do the same steps for %temp%, prefetch.
Restart the computer in the normal mode.
Configure the IP address properly and optimize the browser.
