The compact process only eliminates slack space in the message store. Your messages don't go anywhere. Now, if you were compacting and the process was interrupted and your message store became corrupted and you're opening OE to empty folders, one of the numerous Outlook Express repair utilities may be necessary. Periodically backing up your message store (and other documents) is also prudent.
