Get a Walkman MP3 player that you can use to hold your songs or download audio books. You can get a used one on Ebay for less than $50 for 16G of memory. The ones with 16G come with a built in speaker so you don't have to use headphones all the time if you don't want to. They are pretty durable but get a silicone cover to put over it to keep water/moisture out.
