When mine were growing into that stage, I explained things in simple terms, so that they woulnd't be terrified when the period actually started.

I didn't mince words either, but the basics covered the changes to their bodies, what happens when they acutally have a period, and then showed them how a pad worked. That was enough at the time.

But, I really liked your quesiton because I figure there has to be a better way, or easier way to get through that stage.

I found this book on line, which had a really good reference. Maybe it is suitable for your needs.

Go to your local library and talk to the librarian in charge of the children's book section. There are a number of books written to help parents through the "talk".

My daughter is 6 and last year when she was five she walked in on me in the bathroom using a tampon and spied the used one in the toilet. So of course she was concerned.

I kept it brief, child language, and simple. "when girls get older, around when they are in 6th, 7th and 8th grade, a girls privates will have a little bit of bleeding. it doest hurt. and its not bad. its a good thing. its how our bodies were made." of course she asked why it happens. I said simply 'it has to do with how baby's get in mommys tummy. Want to go to the park?"
    And that ended that LOL
I'm a firm believer in not lying. And I also believe in answering the questions they ask, but changing the subject at the end of an issue that she isn't old enough for yet.

I hope I helped. Good luck hon.
