Hitting a child is always a mistake - but it appears that you already realize that. Hitting and then hugging him sends a very mixed message.

I don't understand - your child doesn't go anywhere alone? Where would a 1-1/2 year old child go alone?

If you are frustrated and angry is there a possibility someone could help you by occasionally babysitting or watching your child for you so you get out of the house?

When your child is saying "no" can you distract him or ignore him or give him a time out?

If you are hitting your 1 1/2 year old for not understanding simple instructions, you are out of control.

Your expectations of what he/she is capable of understanding, is not age approprate. Nor does the punishment fit the crime on a child so young.

Please seek some help in understanding how hitting a child in frustration and anger is not only wrong, but inappropriate, and learn how to effectively parent this child through the very early stages when they are unable to clearly tell you their needs.

Please see your family doctor and ask for help and referral to counselling and/or parenting classes. Parenting with some instruction will make your life much easier, and it won't be as difficult as you may think. But, you do need support from going to angry to hitting.

If you don't stop this cycle, you will only get more and more overwhelmed, and your child will end up in hospital with a broken bone and bruising that will result in consequences you didn't intend.

This isn't optional- you need to control your anger, and learn how to parent effectively.
