6yr old seeing bright light - then dizzyness, fainting
    Hi,

My six year old boy just complained of seeing a bright light, then feeling dizzy, like he was going to faint. Got a call from his school nurse. He is OK now - but episode is unusual for him.

He is in school @ 11:15 am - in his classroom. He had a regular breakfast today at 8 am.

No head injury - not exercising, not running around - just normal activity in the classroom.

Normally in good health - although in Dec 2006 he had two ear infections related to colds.

What might this be a symptom of? How should I approach this?

    Any comments appreciated.

While this site does have medical experts who will have helpful opinions, I strongly urge you to get your son to a doctor asap.

I had this happene to me once too. The episode lasted for about 5 minutes, and my school sent me to the hospital. I'm 19, but I had the same symptoms as your son. I think they called it "near-syncope". They said basically my body was trying to faint, but I was resisting it. They said any number of things can trigger it.. stress, fatigue, or even low blood pressure. They also told me it's not uncommon for people to have an episode like this. The only time you need to worry is if it keeps happening. I would suggest taking your son to a doctor too though, just in case.. and to get it documented in his records.

Let me see you go and pick hiim up from school and rush him to the doctor or ER to be checked out . That comes to mind when you ask how do you approach it.

Oh dear, poor little guy. I bet he was scared. It could be anything from an inner ear infection to a mild type of seizure. The bright light he said he saw could have been an aura associated with a seizure. Still I agree with everyone. He needs to be seen by a doctor for blood work and tests. Cat scan. etc. the school nurse should've sent him home. It could even be a case of standing up too quickly as well. But he needs to be seen by a doctor. And don't stop till you get all your questions answered.

Yes take him to the doctors to get diagnosed and then let us know because we may... as RickJ said ''have helpful opinions'' once we know what it is.

*Are these episodes happening only at school?
*When he hasn't eaten for awhile?
*Any thing that you can think of that may be a pattern to the problem?
