"Mono" is Latin for one. e.g. monochrome = one + color ; monocle = one lens ; monocotyledon = one + cotyledon

In the context of chemistry, the prefixes used are as follows:

mono: one (eg. Monochloro methane, , one chlorine in methane)

di: two (eg. Dichloro methane, , two chlorine in methane)

tri: three (eg. Monochloro trifluoro methane, , one chlorine, three fluorine in one methane)

tetra: four (eg. Tetrachloro methane, , four chloro in one methane)

penta: five (eg. Copper sulfate pentahydrate, , copper sulfate with 5 moles of water of crystallisation)

hexa: six (eg. Potassium hexacyano ferrate (III) )

hepta: seven (eg. Magnesium sulfate hepta hydrate, )

    etc.

Wondergirl agrees : You are soooooo smart. Cute too!
Lol, what can I do? I have to learn the naming of some compounds, and these happen to be in my syllabus :o

Of course, there are much worse... like the specific conditions used for a reaction to take place so that it is economically good (concerning manufacture of ammonia, sulfuric acid, etc). I prefer not bring them here.

    Thanks WG :)
