    A "noble gas" configuration has filled shells. For the lower atomic numbered elements, that means, the filled octet rule.

    Wikipedia - Noble gas

    Note in the reference, there is a table of the shells that are filled for each noble gas. You're trying to find electrons from other elements to share so that each atom will achieve a filled shell like one of the noble gases.
