Can someone please tell me what might be wrong with my kitten? He's lethargic, tongue continually sticking out of his mouth, with excessive salivation. He's about 2 and a half months old +-, and these symptoms started a few days ago after he accidentally got left in the garage without food or water for the day while I was at work. I did see a rodent of some sort down there... smallish, but with a fairly long tail. My adult cat was also down there... but she doesn't seem to be affected by anything. I can't afford to take the kitten to a vet... and am quite concerned about what might be wrong. Can anyone tell me where to find help on this please?

Honey, the only place you will be able to find help for this issue is with a vet. It can be any number of things that could be causing this. Your kitten could have gotten a hold of something toxic while stuck in the garage. The fact that he is lethargic, tongue sticking out, and excessively drooling should tell you something is seriously wrong. Without being able to examine him, no one online can tell you with total certainty what it is and what home remedy will work. Please, get him to a vet before it is too late.

Has he had his vaccines? It sounds like it may be feline leukemia or maybe feline distemper. Is there anything in your garage that the kitten may have gotten into? Such as paint, cleaners, insect killer, thing of the poison nature? The best thing for him is obviously a vet visit, as it is impossible for anyone to diagnose him over the computer. It really could be anything. If it is impossible to get him to a vet, keep your cats separate, and try to make sure the sick kitty stays hydrated. Best of luck to you.

Thank you both... I guess desperation drove me to ask the question that I realize only a vet can diagnose... I'll try to find a local vet who will look at the kitten despite my inability to pay... I appreciate the kind responses. :)

Maybe there's a vet in your area willing to do some sort of payment plan. You can also try some local cat rescue shelters in your area. Some that are near me have a vet on call that does low cost spay/neuter clinics and will also look at sick animals in special circumstances. I should've mentioned that earlier but for some reason I didn't think of it. I know how much of a struggle (money-wise) life can be and I think it's good of you to be concerned enough to try and find some treatment. Just let the vets and shelters know your situation and you may get lucky and get discounted or free services. Good luck! I hope he gets to feeling better!

Internet! Go on line to search. Call the shelter, they will help. Go to a pet store to ask,
There are also cheaper vets. The usual vet visit is about $35, depends on the place, of course. Do not leave it like that, don't let him suffer.

I had that same problem with a kitten of mine after leaving her under my daughter's care while out of town. (Daughter left the house and left animals alone for almost 2 days!) Got back and the baby was drooling, tongue hanging out, and it smelled bad. All she would do is lay in my lap. I did not have anything toxic laying around that she could have gotten into. I did take her to the vet and what he came up with was that I should check all the electrical cords in the house to see if maybe she had bitten into one. Her tongue was burned, and it was down her throat a bit. Since we could rule out chemicals I checked all the cords and found one that had a small nick in it. We figured that was it. I feed her diluted baby food, and water, with a dropper until she could eat on her own again. I don't remember him giving her any medication for it. Good luck!
