I rescued a stray kitten but he seems to be sick. I can't really afford to take him to the vet and want to try to treat him at home. He has a stuffy runny nose, coughs like he has a furball when his throat is touched or when I try to force feed him water, watery eyes, won't eat or drink, sleeps a lot but seems to have normal amount of energy when awake but hasn't voided doe at least 24 hrs! What has he got and what can I do for him, if I need meds where can I get them?

From those symptoms it seems to be respiratory infection which isn't good for young cats, especially when their immune systems can't handle anything from not having enough 'mothers milk'. There is not very much you can do, there are no home remedies my dear. Just keep the little thing warm, try and get it to take water at least. Fluid is very important. I would try some warm milk with bread softened up. You need to stroke the little things tummy to make it void. It stimulates the GI tract to eliminate.

Keep the little thing very warm, close by you. I use to stick the little things in my bra, between my breasts, where they seemed to feel the best hearing a heartbeat and felt very secure.

A trip to the vet would be a good idea. Sorry.

Do have an idea of the age of the kitten?

It could be a number of things from a chest infection to cat flu.

Unfortunately you are going to have to get the little one to the vet...

He's got to be at least 4 months old, not a tiny tiny thing but defiantly not full grown, well past weening age. Last night I force feed him milk with baby cereal with a bit of puréed meat in it and a fair amount of water with a suction thing for babies, after a few hours this seemed to help his throat problem some. He's still in good spirits and hopefully this cold/flu passes cause he is such a cute little bugger! Thanks all for your help its greatly appreciated

If you don't take him to a vet be prapared that you might lose him.

I hope it is nothing serious and he recovers. Glad he is feeling a little better :)

Perhaps you would be better trying to adopt him out to someone with a little more resources. Vet care is ESSENTIAL when owning an animal, stray or not.

It could be distemper, guys. In that case, if it has gone too far, then the vet can't do very much at all.

What kind of milk did you give him?
Especially if he is sick, don't give him cows milk! Most cats are lactose-intolerant, and milk *can* give them GI upset and vomitting.

I agree with everyone else you need to get the little guy to the vet. Also cows milk very bad for cats, even though they like it. I feel that if your going to have an animal you need to be able to take it to the vet for shots and checkups. PLUS Get Them Spayed or Neutered! Please. I scoop up strays every now and then and get them fixed when I have some extra money. I get tired of pulling kittens from under my house all the time because people don't get their animals fixed.
