    Lost cat
We've been taking care of and feeding a stray cat for about 6 months now. It took him a while, but after a few months, he would cuddle next to us on the sofa and was really affectionate and loving. So, 2 days ago we bought a carrying case and decided to take him to the vet.
Unfortunately, the carrying case had not been securely shut and when we got in the door of the vet's office, he escaped through a small opening in the back and made a mad dash through the front door of the office which was unfortunately wide open.
We have been really upset for 2 days now and have been searching the area, but, no luck.
I was wondering if anyone was familiar with cat behavior and could tell me if they generally stay close to the place where they escaped from or do they ever try to find their way back home? Should we try putting a trap out for him outside the vet's office?
He was an outdoor cat that was used to hunting... but, had done very little hunting in the 6 months he was with us.
I presume they don't lose that hunting instinct?
I am hoping he is safe and has started hunting for his food again.

    Hello missingbelmont,

Cats are hunters and even domesticated ones retain this ability. Remember he was a stray and he was able to look after himself before he found you.

I think I know how you feel, it is more the fact that you don't know if Belmont (I assume that is what you have named him) is OK.

Although you cannot be sure, it is likely that he is doing fine. Cats are very capable of looking after themselves when they have to. He may have even found another home and is taking advantage of their hospitality.

There is always a possibility that he could find his way back to you, but don't be too optimistic about that.

We had a cat once which took off every few months, for a few months, and then came back. This went on for years.

If you have not already done so, it may be an idea to go back to the general area where Belmont 'escaped' and have a good look around. Of course advertising in the local paper, radio, or posting a few 'Lost' posters in the area could possibly find him.

One thing that does concerns me is the vet allowing doors leading out of the surgery to be open. There is always the possibility an animal escaping from its carrying case etc.

Very good luck and if you do get him back, please post a little something here to let us know.
