I've always been told it's from excess calcium - for example, from chewing on bones.

What do you feed the dogs?

Excessive bones in diet, or too much calcium otherwise will do it, but it has also been blamed on liver irregularity (I never found any specific problem in the literature, but it used to be quite commonplace. I used to think it was part of thje 'drying up' process when I was a kid, but apparently not. Well balanced dog foods, nutritionally, is a relatively new 'treat' for our pets, in spite of what some critics say about commercial dog foods in general.

If all your dogs have this, then it is probably what they are eating. If only one dog, maybe he would benefit from a trip to his vet?
