    Pregnant cat with cold
I have a pregnant cat due any time soon.About three days ago she started sneezing and had a runny nose. But her eyes and eating habits are normal and fine. The cat is sneezing more often and when she breaths you can hear her nose is all stuffed up. I normal wouldn't be concerned but since she is pregnant I am starting to worry. Can her cold harm the kittens when they are born? Can the cold spread to the other cat in my home?

The cold could spread and could harm the kittens. Time for the vet.

Hi cat, your cat has an upper respiratory infection usually called 'kitty cold' and yes it is contagious to your other cat. Probably picked up from another cat outdoors, or possibly the cat that impregnated her. These infections are not normally serious to a healthy cat that is eating, drinking, etc. The kittens are another story. Because they will have almost none existent immune systems for a while until they start nursing, they will get it too.

I guess a vet call is in order to see if she can have this vaccine at this time. I suggest you have your other cat vaccinated as well.

I have my animals spayed or neutered. Animal shelters anywhere just cannot handle all the cats, kittens, dropped off or otherwise found and we all know what happens to them if they can't be adopted.

Edit: the vaccination is called Feline panleukopenia/calicivirus and Chlamydophila vaccines

Do you know if the cold continues to become more of a problem could it led to a miscarriage?

The 'medicine' is a vaccination. Although you may not agree with meds, herbal stuff is fine for humans, but unfortunately there is nothing herbal you can offer here which is going to help them at all.

I think I stated that the vet would know about the vaccination being harmful to the kittens, as in ingesting the substance in the mothers milk etc. Ask him. But at this point in her pregnancy she may not be able to have the shot. All you can do is ask. Usually if it is a pregnant animal involved, vets will be good enough to give you info over the phone because they sort of know in some cases, the animal can't travel.

There are lots of herbal remedies for colds! Raw honey is one of them. The bacteria in the raw honey helps sooth the throat. Coughing in animals leads to the deadly phenomonia. Which is what antibiotics will prevent or heal. The cat should be on antibiotics to prevent that from setting in, but antibiotics are not going to boost the immune system to fight the cold off..

You can also mix vitamin C in with Colloidal Silver in distilled water. All is find when pregnant. Colloidal Silver is actually better then any antibiotic given by a doctor. You can buy it at any health food store.

Vaccinating for anything right now is putting the babies at jeapordy and should only be done if the vet says its OK. Any type of kennel cough (which is what your cat has) is never 100% vaccinated against. There are hundreds of strands that are always mutating and becoming immune to the actual vaccine.

All the methods I just told you about I use on my own animals and even myself. It works.

    Good luck.
