My kitten seems very deprssed and quite
My kitten is 8 weeks old now and seems very sad. He just wants to sleep all day for last few days and is not eating much. He drinks plenty and his stools are OK but, he just doesn't want to play. He was so lively at first now just so quite, it is very hot here at the moment, could he just be suffering in the heat?

How long have you had him? Are there other cats around?

8 weeks is young for a kitten to be away from it's mother. They should really stay with her until at least 12 weeks. It may just be a case of homesickness. If that's the case, then it will go away with time.

It's also possible that it's the heat. Do you have fans he can lounge near? Most cats don't like to sit directly in front of fans, but they don't mind sitting off to side out of the direct airflow. Encourage play during the cooler hours of early morning and late evening, and let him sleep during the hottest part of the day.

On really hot days, I give my cats ice cubes to chase across the floor. Batting the ice cubes around and licking them both help lower their body temperature a little bit.

You can also try petting him with wet hands. It'll dampen his fur and help him stay just a little cooler for a few minutes. Most of a cat's body heat is released through their ears, so even just petting his head and getting around his ears damp will help.

And, of course, ALWAYS make sure your kitty has water. If it gets warm, then change it out a few times a day. Cool water will help him more than warm, and he'll be more likely to drink it.

He may just be missing his siblings, then. His playmates are gone, and mommy's a bit big for him to play with right now.

In the future, try to wait until about 12 weeks before you adopt any babies out. Even if they're eating solid food and using the litter box before that, they need the extra weeks to learn needed social skills that teach them to be cats. One of the most important (at least for the humans around them) is when they can and cannot use teeth and claws, and how to control how hard they bite and scratch.

Maybe it is diabetes? Those are some signs. Take him to the vet

New Kitten [ 1 Answers ]

I purchased a kitten supposedly 7 weeks old. It doesn't eat much at all and is very skinny. To the point you can feel boes easily. Probably the runt. Should I be concerned and what can I do to get my kitty eating more to fatten up a bit.
