    My kitten has worms/ear mites
:-/ Hi! I have an 8 week old female kitten who was born in a rabbit barn (so I was told). When we went to pick her up I noticed her brother and an older cat were absolutely ravenous. I brought in 3 packets of the kitten food I bought for (now named) my Lacey. They went crazy trying to get at the food. Brought Lacey to the vet yesterday, she had a hard belly so I suspected worms (correct) and ear mites (correct). I gave her the worm medicine last evening, she vomited and I there were some dried up worms (2" long) on the chair where she vomited. She must be so infested!! I just read that there is a chance that humans can get them too!! Of course I'm kissing her on the mouth and all over her little belly! Now, my ear is sooooooo itchy I'm thinking I have ear mites too!! HELP! I have also been sleeping on the couch with her so she wouldn't be scared her first couple of nights and she slept right under my chin. I also have a 2 year old female Lizzy. I treated her for the worms as well, but I really don't think she had them. She is a very very healthy outdoor cat. I tried to make her an indoor cat but she ripped through screens to get out. My questions is, can I get these little insects??
    Thank you!

Re: my kitten has worms/ear mites
U won't get the worms off her but you might get the mites and so might your other cat, if you treat one you may as well treat both to make sure, the only thing you should worry about is if you come in contact with a cats urine.

Roundworms look like spaghetti and tapeworms look like grains of rice. Both can be picked up from a cat's prey such as small rodents and birds. Roundworms are picked up by eggs in infected cats' urine and feces. These eggs can survive for years in the soil. The cat will collect them on its coat or paws and then ingest them when grooming. Worming treatments must be carried out regularly to prevent infection.

Symptoms of roundworms include vomiting, dehydration and weight-loss.

Humans can get them whilst cleaning out litter trays and not observing proper hygiene afterwards.

Re: my kitten has worms/ear mites
    Hello LizzyLace,

Revolution sounds like a great solution for you.  It's a tube of liquid that you can squirt on the back of your kitty's neck.  It will take care of roundworms, heartworms, ear mites, and fleas.

Each tube lasts one month and I suggest using Revolution for at least two months in a row.

After that, switch to Advantage to control fleas.

The only way you can get roundworms is by ingesting fecal matter from the kitten.  This is less likely for you but if your older cat shares a box with the kitten, she can get the worms by stepping in the kitten's feces and then licking it off her feet.

Revolution would be a good thing to use on the older cat as well just to be sure.

Whatever you do, DON'T ever use store bought flea treatments on cats (esp. Hartz).  They are dangerous poisons and are more likely to kill your cat than the fleas!

Please get the roundworms under control as soon as possible.  If they migrate to other parts of the body (such as the lungs or brain), they can cause death.  I don't wish to scare you, but make you aware so you can deal with the worms properly.

I let my baby go too long...

    Regards,

    :D
    Dear angelcakes and koriani:
Thank you for your replies. I'm sorry about your baby koriani. The vet gave me medicine to give both my kitties. Lacey (the 8 week old that was diagnosed with worms) seem so so so much better and has grown a lot! I've changed her kitty litter box every day and just gave her the 2nd dose of medicine today. I actually only got half of it in her mouth, she's a little devil. Do you think that would be okay or should I give her a little more? I don't want her to get sick. I never actually did see worms though after she took the meds. It was only before that I saw them. Is that normal? The vet did mention the revolution. I just don't trust all the shots and medications that they give animals these days. My lizzie (2 years this month) is an outdoor cat and she is the healthiest little kitty. She's had the normal shots and was spayed a long time ago and I'm just so afraid that if I start shooting her up with all these medications, she'll get sick on me. I put frontline on her every month for ticks and fleas but that's about it. Although she does come home with mice, moles and birds. She can get sick from these?
I didn't know worms could travel to other parts of the body! Then I guess the other 2 cats she lived with are doomed. This kid that takes care of them does not have a clue!!

Sounds like you take very good care of your kitties.

I'm glad your baby is feeling better and growing.

Revolution is not a shot, it is a topical just like Frontline and is very safe, so please don't feel bad about using it.

I have indoor/outdoor cats that like to hunt and I use a tube of Revolution every 3 months or so to kill worms as well as fleas and ear mites.

If your baby only got 1/2 the worm medication, I would give more. Only as much as the kitten missed, though.

I hope things continue to go well.

    My kitten has worms
I have just become the 1st time owner of a kitten Molly, She is 3months old and I almost have her a week, I got her from an animal shelter. 2 days before I got her she was dewormed and deflead. When I took her home 2 days later the threw up and she threw up again last night sso I knew it was worms, I took her to the shelter and they gave my worm tablet for her, but I noticed last night she had a worm coming out of her bottom. How do I know if the worms have completely gone as she is very affectionate I have had to isolate from her, but I keep her in the kitch as my house is small it's the only place for her. Please help as I'm at my wits end with panic and hygiene, will these worms fall out of her bottom, she gets up on the counter top too please help :(
