My 12 year old female cat had a stoke yesterday around 4 in the afternoon. I immediately took her to the vet and he kept her overnight and put her on IV and a cortizone shot. She could not stand and was totally limp. As of 11:00 this morning, she is still not standing. He does not think that she can see because her pupils are not dilating with the light. Also, her temperature has gone from 101 to 99 which he did not like. He placed her on a heating pad immediately after arriving there yesterday. He placed some water on her tongue this morning and she did swallow and he is going to start her on some babyfood on her tongue every two hours.

He actually said that I can bring her home! I will have to place her on a heating pad, try and give her water and some baby food. I then proceeded to ask him how she would go to the bathroom if she could not stand and he said that she would lay and urinate if she did that... I told him to keep her through this afternoon and I would call back to see if there were any changes. Has anyone gone through a cat with the same symptoms and did they fully recover and how long did it take. I can't fathom a cat urinating on a heating pad and getting urine on them... they are so clean. How much do you put them through?

This isn't right on topic, but my posting will bump this up to the top of the new threads so others might see it sooner, if nothing else.

We had a 14 year old dog who had a stroke, we believe, easter Sunday. Hed had just the normal problems of a older dog... a little gimpy and slower. A little hard of hearing and eyesight, but otherwise nothing unhealthy.

Then it hit and he couldn't stand. Peed all over. Was more cognitive than your cat. He responded to visual stimulus. But he was clearly upset about getting up.

We had to put him down. He was a bigger dog, and had just enough body control that I think hed have hurt himself trying to get up. Strong enough to lift, not enough to control.

I'm sure with the cat it could be different, at least in terms of your being able to help her.

Also, we had a cat (13 yo) who we also had to put down this year (lung cancer, of all things, in a non smoking house). She became weak, nonresponsive and just wouldn't eat at all. We brought her home from the vet and gave it 3 days. After 2 days of very little water intake and no progress we put her down on the 3rd. She just wasn't getting the food and water she was going to need and it was clear there was no going back.

I think if the vet says you can bring her home, you certainly can do that, as we did. But I can't imagine keeping a pet that dirtied itself, was unresponsive, and especially didn't get any better with food and drink. Wed had our cat in twice before with food intake issues and it always got better within 2 days. After that, I think its time to ask some serious questions. The only "good" thing about bringing our cat home was my daughter had time to say goodbye while she tried to get better.

Now hopefully someone will ring in with success or at least experience with a cat improving after a stroke. Sorry to hear this.

I put my cat down yesterday. She was 17 and had a stroke. My cat could not walk at all. She was still eating and drinking but had to do it laying down. My cat was also diabetic. She had had a good life and it was time for her to go. I am so sad and some what wished I would have not done it. But, I know it was the best thing for her.
