    My cat is leaking!
I have an 8 yr old female cat. She is overweight and does have difficulty cleaning herself. For MANY months now she has been leaving little tiny brown spots when she sits down. I have to clean her at least once a week or her hair gets really matted by her vagina. It is really gross. I am not sure if it is urine or something else. It does appear to be brown and it is not coming from her anal area. She has no symptoms of being ill. She doesn't seem to notice only I do, but it is gross and I am at a loss of what to do. Any advice? I don't really want to have to take her to the vet and run tests since she does not appear to be ill and I don't have a whole lot of money to spend.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't consider myself an expert but I have had cats all my life and since no one is offering you any help I will try...

I understand not having money to go for tests, the vet, etc. But you really should. I've had several female cats and what you're describing is not normal! Is your cat spayed? Has she ever had a litter of kittens? My next door neighbor's cat had kittens recently, and she was leaking fluid from her vagina. My neighbor postponed taking her to the vet, to save money, and the cat ended up dying. My neighbor was also reported to animal services. Apparently the cat had a kind of infection of the uterus, like PID in humans.

Sorry I couldn't offer any better help than this, but going to the vet seems like a good idea in this case. If you're extremely worried about cost, you could try phoning around first and see what the cheapest vet in your area costs. Around here the vets are quite competitive. And if you're lucky enough to have a vet college in your city (we do!), you can take your cat there and get a discount if a veterinary resident treats your pet. Some vets are even willing to discuss the problem with you on the phone, free of charge, before you go in.

    Good luck!

Sounds like a urinary infection. You can give your cat the same antibiotics that people take if you happen to have any around from an old prescription. 100mgs per 10lbs of body weight. For instance if your cat weighs 10lbs, and you have a 500mg capsule, dump the capsule out on a piece of paper, separate it with a butterknife into as close to 5 equals parts are you can eyeball, if they are a little off, it won't hurt. Then mix one pile into her food, and save the rest to do this again the following day, do this once a day for 10 days as you would for a person taking it. You can do the same with antibiotic pills by crushing them into a fine powder.

I had a cat that was hurt once, and we didn't have the money the vet wanted for an emergency visit. Luckily, another vet from out of town returned my desperate phone call, and gave me the info to treat him myself, until I would have the money to take him in for a visit. (Of course this guy was much nicer, and was going to treat him if I could get him to his office, and let me pay later. He was much more worried about my furbaby than the money!)

This could also be caused by worms, round worms tend to infect the urinary tract. You can buy the remedy for this in any store that sells pet supplies.

The ultimate broke person solution to try first is mixing a little epsom salts in milk, and warming it up until it dissolves, 1/2 teaspoon per half cup of milk, and letting your cat drink it. This provides a laxative, and cleansing effect. You may end up with a few accidents to clean around the house, but it will kill worms that may be in their system, and clean out bacteria.

These of course are only temporary remedies, as soon as you can afford it afterwards, you should take her to the vet for a check up.

I know its been quite awhile since this was posted but I was wondering if you ever figured out what was wrong with your cat? I have a 5 year old female cat who is overweight and is leaking. She seems totally fine otherwise but she smells of urine and her fur is wet and appears to be kind of brown. Its so gross and I've brought her to the vet and they just put her on antibiotics which did nothing. I need to fix this.
