When car was turned off, the engine was still running
    Hi,
It is still my Toyota Corolla 1997. It has been having starting problem and seems related to the fuel line problem. I did not do good job in maintaining the car. It has close to 150k miles. Last few weeks I need to push the gas paddle several times to get it started.

Tonight I went out and seemed the car had lots of noise. When I parked the car, it won't stop the engine after the key was pulled out. It was running at lower engine speed. When the key was inserted, it ran normal speed. When I stepped out of the car, I smelled burning smell, like the engine was burning. After a few tries, the engine finally stopped. About 20 minutes later, I drove the car home. This time the engine stopped OK.

I wonder whether someone knows the reason why the car was still running when the key was pulled. How serious the problem?

    Thanks for your help.

It sounds potentially serious. It could cost you a tank of gas if it doesn't shut off. I would guess it to be in the ignition system. The burning smell might lead to a fire? I've had a similar situation which caused my battery to drain all the way to dead... I believe it was called a cillinoid or relay switch. Not that expensive but caused greater expense in repairs and battery problems... also very inconvenient. The lower engine speed might be because the electrical current was coming from the battery rather than the alternator and therefore not supplying full current that would be under normal conditions. This is only a guess on my part. I am not a mechanic... and actually bad at putting off car repairs myself.

When I used to have that problem someone told me shut the ignition off in neutral and then turn the key the rest of the way off and it worked. Don't know with the newer cars.
It could be the ignition switch or solenoid or I think the timing- high idle.

I think you have to take it to the dealer. I know it use to be something only they could reset.
I was reading some things that say you can disconnect the battery for 5 to 15 minutes.
I don't see how that would work.

The battery disconnect might work because the computer would reset itself when power is reconnected. Don't know if it works in all cases though.

Hey Kenny, folks would help you but you should not just tag your question on to someone else's post, it confuses us old guys. Start your own question separately and I'll bet you get results.
