    Overheating 2000 Toyota Solara
I have recently bought a 2000 Toyota Solara from a guy who runs an auto repair shop next door to where I work.It has approx. 115,000 miles on it. And it is nice, but...
Since we have put the car on the road, if you drive it on a more than 30 mile trip it overheats and smells like burning oil-then the car starts smoking like a fog machine at a KISS Concert.
I have taken the car to this guy's shop 4 or 5 different times now and his ASE Certified head mechanic has worked on it for free for us.
This last Friday when we picked it up we thought the problem was over.
NOT!-the same problem is still occurring(as of this evening)-the smell of burning oil followed by thick smoke and also puddles of oil underneath.
I am going to go get an estimate from a Toyota dealer soon(to find out what is wrong once and for all) but was wondering if ANYBODY out there can tell me what is going on-this mechanic has fixed thousands of cars including my other car-but he has not solved this one yet and I don't know if I want to take the car back to him yet again. This is turning into a nightmare.
The car is filled with fresh oil, it has water-it's all lubed and juicy. What is the problem so if I do go back to this guy he can fix it right? This guy repairs our delivery trucks so he's a good guy and a good mechanic-he just can't fix the Toyota as of yet.

    FWI:

There is a forum dedicated to Solara owners at SolaraGuy.com :: Index. If you get help there, post back.

It sounds like you have a couple of problems:
Overheating could be something as simple as a thermostat or a cooling fan relay, but I would think the shop would have found that rather quickly.
Same with the oil leak. It could be the right or rear valve cover gasket that is leaking, but again, that should have been picked up rather quickly.

Engine light on 2002 Toyota Solara [ 2 Answers ]

I have had an engine light on my 2002 Toyota Solara for a month. I hooked up a scanner to it and got code 446. It appears to be a bad vacuum switching valve. If so, would this affect the running of the engine? Also, if it is a bad vsv, how much do they cost and who sells them?
