    Air Conditioning Refill Port
Could anyone tell me exactly where the low side port of the air conditioning system is on a 1998 Lincoln Continental. I'd like to refill the unit myself.

Look for the service ports under hood: the low side is the smaller port usually with blue cap, though sometimes black; the high side is the large port and usually a red cap though sometimes also black.

Are you: qualified? Certified? Aware of the high pressures you're dealing with? Sure there's no air in the system? No leaks?

How you going to vacuum the system to make sure you get the proper charge? An improper charge is just as bad as under-charged.

Where did your last refridgerant go?

Thanks for the info and additional questions. I did take the car to a qualified mechanic considering the additional questions you posed. The problem was more extensive and not just in need of a recharge.

On any system, if there is any refrigeration at all, the low side will be cold and the high side will be hot. Also, the low side will be a bigger line than the high side. This is because the refrigerant is compressed on the high side and more can move through a smaller line. (Both lines have to move the same amount of refrigerant, but at different pressures.)

You should have 5 wires running to the outside unit. 2 big heavy, insulated ones plus a ground from the breaker outside by the unit, and a couple of little insulated ones coming out from the furnace. With the thermostat calling for cooling, the big ones should have 240 V between them and the...
