Hope someone can help me with this problem

I just bought an automatic 1990 Nissan Terrano with the 2.7L turbo diesel engine. When I first start it up while it is cold it drives perfect. Absolutely no problems. After the engine temps rise the trouble starts. From a stop I start to go and give it just a little fuel it starts to to clatter real bad and a lot of black smoke comes out the exhaust.

If it helps any I noticed that the accelerator cable is worn so it does not come back to proper idle which may account for the smoke but the rattle has me beat,any help would be much appreciated

If a diesel smokes, under any conditions other than full throttle or high load, something is wrong. Generally, too much fuel is being injected. At idle, or normal operating conditions found in the midwest of the U.S. and Canada, diesels shouldn't smoke.

Look into a commercial diesel fuel additive, that is available at most large truck stops. Try and find one that is pure biodiesel, intended to be mixed in the tank at a B20 or less rate. Look for the words "naturally produced oil" or "biodiesel" on the side of the can listing ingredients. Properly mixed, it will reduce the amount of smoke an older, worn engine produces.

Use Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 diesel engine oil. If anything is going to attenuate the rattle, this product will do it. It's readily available at WalMart. Also, make sure the injectors are working properly and that the turbo is not "coked up." Keep air filter clean and water out of the fuel. Be sure to change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles.
