    1986 S-10 4 cyl. 2.5L 5-speed fuel injected. Suddenly shut down.
I finally got the engine checked. The keyway at the camshaft/timing gear DAMAGED the camshaft slot. Gear and shaft spin; not simpy a broken key. Camshaft and all related items need replacing. Engine has 175,000 miles. Smokes a little on starting only, maybe leaks a little. (Concerned about simply repairing this problem only, with the amount of miles. Never ringed, etc.) Shop quoted $850 (includes $480.00 labor) to replace camshaft and related items IF valves are not bent. They're to check that. OR Jasper rebuilt engine, $2,098.00 + $786.00 labor. Truck is "86 S-10 2.5L 5-speed maual, fuel injected. EVERYTHING replaceable has been done everywhere else on the truck within the lase few years from computer to steering box, front suspension parts, wiper motor, blower motor, brakes, clutch, starter, water pump, radiator, muffler, you name it; with lifetime parts. New seat and headliner; planned to paint. Prefer to fix truck instead of junking. No low mileage engine located so far. Gearhead engine, Jasper, rebuild mine or whatever? Suggestions? Thanks. Ron. Compare any warranties offered by each level of repair and then you, and only you, can make the decision which will be the best way to go.

I would consider the rebuilt engine, Jasper has nation wide warranty and with the other you have unknown costs if they find other issues
