My son started the taurus, had his foot on the gas peddle and when he put car in reverse it made a clicking sound and is in netural no matter were he putts shifter in P,R,N,D,2,1

I have a 2005 ford taurus (65k). My transmission just stop working. It starts up OK and when I put it into any gear it will not go into any gear what soever. The Gear shift lever just slides up and down like it has grease or oil on it. It does not Click for R, P, N or D all it does is SLIDES...

I can hear the water gurgling in heater core inside the car, but the heat comes and goes. It's a new heater core from last winter. This is a 99 Taurus and I had a 92 that did the same thing. How do I get all that gunk out of there to unstop it?
