I would like to start a moving business with my husband. He is currently working for a moving company, so I figured that it would be easy to learn the ins and outs. But he has been no help in learning the essentials. I don't really know where to start. What kind of liscensing I would need, industry specific regulations, etc. I also know that the company he works for is somehow contracted through a larger moving company, so they get their overflow jobs, how does one get hooked up like that? Visit the local public library and talk with a reference librarian about this. The library has all sorts of resources about starting a small business in general and suggestions on this particular kind of business.

Contact movers, large and small, by email and letter and phone. For instance, Allied Van Lines (who has merged with North American, I believe, and changed their name) likes to have local agents, so check to see if there is one in your area. If so, call them to find out the ins and outs of becoming an agent of a larger company (just so you have that info in hand). If there is no agent, contact the corporate office (it's in Ft. Wayne IN now, used to be near Chicago) to find out about becoming an agent.

If you don't want to be connected to a larger moving company, become a local mover if you are in a big enough town. The library should have info on that too, plus the village, township, county, and state depts you will have to contact if registration or licensing is needed.

Sorry, I didn't realize it was being rude, I just figured some people with certain expertise might only check certain areas and I wanted to be sure that my question would be seen. I have never used this site before. That was a little harsh. Thank you all for your help, it is much appreciated. I have looked at the Score website and it is awesome!
