    Cartilage Keloid?or just a bump?
OK simple question... I have a bump on the back of my cartilage piercing, and Im not sure.. if it's a keloid or a simple bump some people get of their cartilage piercing.
So.. how do you determine if a bump is a keloid??

By the way.. I had my piercing done with a gun...

2 monthes now... I've had it pierced.

A keloid will look like a scar, the skin will be a different color than the rest of your ear.

How fresh is the piercing? It could also be a bump simply caused by irritation. This kind of bump will be the same color as the rest of your ear.

Have you been playing with it a lot? Have you changed the jewelry yet?

It is recommended to not change your jewelry for about 12 weeks. If you change it before then, it could cause irritation, which could in turn cause this bump.

Hi, I've had my lip pierced now for 5 or 6 yrs now. Your first mistake was using a gun, never use a gun for piercings. However, keep cleaning it and try and stay away from yeast products like beer and bread products. Wash it for about 6 weeks or so with regular mouth wash, if it's a bump, it should go away. Call the place where you had it done and ask. If its not just a bump, You should probably see a doc. I'm not an expert or anythink but I have had experience with bumps behind my ear. Just my sujestion.

    Okay wait wait.
A lip piercing and an ear piercing are completely different, and don't go about the same way as cleaning.
You don't need to worry about staying away from yeast products. They go to your stomach, and die. Where as in the mouth they go near the piercing and the yeast, which is still living, can go there and infect it if it's a new piercing.
But of course even for that you don't have to worry.
Also don't clean your ear with mouth wash. Use a non-iodized salt solution to clean it. Just add a little salt to a cup of hot water, dip a cotton ball in, and then hold the cotton ball to your ear.
Also, don't touch your new piercing with dirty hands.
Drinking tons of water also helps your body heal~
If it doesn't go away in a few weeks, either go to your doctor to see what's up with it, or remove the piercing, and maybe try again some other time.

My first piercings ever were 4 cartilage piercings in my left ear. They all had a bump on the back. Also, all of them used a gun- which supposedly shatters your cartilage- big mistake. Some of them got infected and it was hard to put the jewelry in and out. I took all my earings out and haven't worn any in months now.

Cartilage piercings are the easiest to get keloids on. I had one for almost a year and it started developing excess scar tissue on the back. It didn't get very big... but that's because I didn't let it. I took the piercing out when the size of the bump started bothering me. It healed up and I pierced it again. My new one is totally healed up and has no bump! I've had it for about half a year now and I'm hoping it will stay without a bump! -crossing my fingers-

In conclusion... if you're really worried about the bump... take the piercing out and pierce it again later! Easy as that. I know it's disappointing to get rid of a piercing... but sometimes it just has to be done.

Its more then likely a keloid I have had mine for the same amount of time and now have a bump as well. I also had mine done with a gun. To get rid of the bump take a cup of water and stick it in your microwave for about a minuet until its really hot, then had 1/8 of a teaspoon of non iodized sea salt to the hot water wait for it all to dissolve, then take two cotton balls stick one on the front of the piercing and one on the back where the bump is this will help any fluid drain out. The water still has to be hot while you are doing this, not boiling hot just as hot as you can stand it touching your skin. Hopefully this will help. It has made my bump go down and I have been doing it for a few days.

I had the same problem with my nose piercing. It was a big boil that was ugly and visible. I started using tea tree oil and saw the difference immediately. The bump reduced in size a lot but not compelety gone.I still have a small bump left but its hardly visible. It has also made the bump left to change to a dark color. Should I worry about this? What should I do to completely remove the bump and lighten the area?

Same here... my keloid looks like this:

    -it makes my ear red
    -it is a hard bump
-it makes my piercing bleed sometimes
    -it hurts to touch
-it makes my ear look puffy
-it is domed shape and makes my ear look deformed...

I hope this helped. Be careful.

I have the same problem on my tragus piercing, its been there for a few months now but it wasn't there right from the start. Mine was done with a needle and I cleaned it everyday. I'm going to the doctors because apparently boils only go away with sea salt wash and keloid only by being sergicly removed.

I had this too and so I went into the tattoo shop where I got my industrial and they said to get some Witch Hazel (you can but this pretty much anywhere just ask for it) and some Bayer Aspirin and then you smash 2 or the Bayer Aspirins with a few drops of the Witch Hazel to make a paste-like substance and you put that on the bump overnight then wash it off in the morning! It should be completely cleared up in about 2 weeks!

I've heard Keloids are common on cartilage peircings.
They can be pink or skill toned. They can be painful if the area is moved and they can itch. Scatching them can cause them to become infected.

I've hade these on two of my peircings, I did't have surgery or injections to remove them.

I used vitamin E oil which you massage into the keloid(this shouldn't be painfull). If the peircing isn't irratating the keliod you shouldn't have to remove it. Keloids can take 3 years to go on their own. Mine went after 1 year, I didn't remove my peircing, I didn't have any issues with it e.g.. Infection or the keloid getting bigger

Could just be hypertrophic scarring, caused by pressure from the gun, these are relatively easy to handle. If it is a keloid, it will be darker then your skin tone. These are harder to combat, although things like hydrocortizone cream and tea tree oil can help. Just diagnose it right first because using the wrong things for the two bumps can do more harm than good.

I think the OP has probably figured all of this out since she first asked in 2007.
