    Chickens
Does anyone raise chickens in town? I am allowed to have chickens in town so I am building a chicken coop. I ordered some Leghorns and Rhode Island reds. Would like to know any "tricks" or info regarding the best way to handle them. Thanks.

OK , as you are in a town then stricklty no male birds otherwise you will not be allowed to keep any at all,
If you have them from young you will need chick crumbs medicated for coccidosis, depending on ageand breed depends on what age they lay eggs from but a lot start laying way before 17 weeks and the diet should be changed accordingly at 6 week the diet should be changed to growers pellets and then at 17 weeks they should be on layers pellets, these can be ordered by the sack from most local pet stores,

Rhode Island reds are considered rare breeds and it is hard to find pure birds, however when they are found the benefits of the eggs are good, big brown tasty eggs :)
However a lot of strains of these birds now do not lay as many as thwey did many years ago you will find you will get 150 to 200 eggs pr year from them now in comparison to the 350 eggs a year we got before...

Look for good pure lines and preferably ask about laying records of how many eggs the breeders get a year from each chicken...
Layers pellets are called finisher over on the site ;)

McMurray Hatchery - Rhode Island Reds a link to a site that sells both chicks and adults and eggs for incubating ;)

They also sell feed on the site :) a reputable company may I add :)
