I`m giving you this answer as a muslim.
No-one can tell you that, except God can give anything from His knowledge for who He wants to comprehend. The life after death is unseen, and can only be known through divine revelation (And according to what is revealed to MuHammad and the Messengers before him -peace be upon them all- what happens to a soul after death depends on what was in the heart of the deceased and what belief, and words, and actions he/she died upon; i.e. what they justly deserve of either reward or punishment in the sight of their Lord, and He is The Most Wise).
The thing is, we don`t know anything from His knowledge, except what He wills. And even as your friend is so important to you, you have more reason to think about your own future, because after your death, you can`t do anything to improve it. According to Islam, God created us to know Him, and to worship Him Alone, and He sent us many Messengers and Prophets -peace be upon them- to guide us how to live according to His will upon the earth, and that whosoever follows His guidance, then no fear for them, and no worries for them. And this short, worldly death and life is a test created for us by The Blessed One, in Whose Hand is the dominion of the heavens and the earth (God) that which of us perfect your actions.
I am sorry if your friend didn`t die as a muslim.
And in any case I`m sorry for his death.
    I`m so sorry.
When our beloved ones die, in Islam we say: "Innaa Lillaahi (Verily we belong to God), wa innaa Ileihi raaji`uun (and verily unto Him we do return)."

It is not uncommon to wonder about the well being of a loved one who has passed over. It is natural to want to know that they are at peace, and no longer in pain.

Many, like me, believe that there is life after death, simply not in this form, but in a spiritual form, that is part of a journey. Just like life was part of the same journey.

I would absolutely say that yes, your friend is okay, and most likely concerned about the loved ones left behind. Time heals the hurt, and eventually we come to a place where only the best of memories are remembered. Nature has a gentle way of allowing us to grieve, and heal from such a loss.

Take good care of yourself Jade, I'm sure you were a good friend.
