Now if your trying for an light brown there are color removers on the market , so that you can remove the color then add color , but going to a dark brown or if color will not remove , you will need to neutralize color with a shot of green. Professional Stylist , ST

Color cannot lift color. Using a green-base ash color can neutralize the red tones in your hair, but it won't make your hair light brown. In order to go from dark or red to light brown color, you will need to chemically lighten your hair with bleach and then apply the desired color. If bleaching is not an option, you can use a hair color remover to strip the unwanted color from your hair. Remember that using a hair color remover will make your hair raw and brassy. After you've strip the color, you will have to re-color your hair.
