Working my way out of debt.
Recently divorced, I've spent the last 2 years working my way out of debt. I have two outstanding credit cards left. I don't use either of them as the accounts have been long closed. They are both with the same bank. The first one, I owe just under $2000 on and I pay a set monthly amount of $325. The other one, is considerably more, about $11,000. After much negotiation on the phone, I agreed to pay them $500 this month and split the rest between the end of December and January. I was counting on my bonus to help me do that. I just found out, my bonus will not cover the remaining amount. How can I get them to agree to a regular lower monthly payment when they would not earlier? There is just no way for me to get a lump sum like that. Would they bother with taking legal action against me if I'm offering to pay them something every month? Can they refuse that? Thanks!

They certainly can refuse, but I would be surprised if they do. It sounds like you are making an honest and sincere effort to pay. I don't see any upside for them to refuse a reasonable settlement.
