Lawsuit threatened over old CC debt
A local lawyer is threatening to sue me for an old credit card debt. (I live in Oregon.) I stopped making payments on this CC back in 2004 or 2005 after losing my job. The amount at the time of charge-off was around $3000. In January, I received a letter from the lawyer asking for immediate payment of the debt, which they claimed was $6100. I sent a debt verification/validation letter and they sent me back a copy of an old statement that reflected the $3200 balance, but they were still asking for $6100. I then sent them another debt verification/validation letter asking them to explain why the debt had gone to such a high amount.

A month went by and I finally heard from the lawyer again yesterday. This time, he's asking me to call his office within 10 days of receipt of the letter to discuss the $3200 debt. (Weird how it went from $6100 back down to $3200. No documentation was sent with the letter.) What do I do now? I don't have $3200 to pay this off. Can I set up a payment plan? Should I ignore this? I don't want to get sued and have my wages garnished, but I also don't want to deal with this guy.

I really don't know how to proceed at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

The Statues of Limitations may have past of this, check with your state.

Its usually 4 years or less.

If that's the case, defend on this basis.

Don't admit to anything to this lawyer , he may be fishing for old debts.

Always file a complain with the STATE BAR ASSOCIATION and the ATTORNEY GENERAL OF YOUR STATE and the companies state for their tactics.
