India and china are the likely candidates. India seems more confident right now, china might accelerate if their economy booms more than expected and they can funnel resources outside of economic development.
Why in the world is iraq on the list?

The thought just came to me as I was writing. Perhaps as a consequence of wishful thinking that envisions that country at peace and its citizens concerned with other matters instead of the present situation. One thing is certain, however, that wherever mankind goes there mankind will be-be it The Moon, Titan, Europa-or Mars. Which means mankind with all its heavy emotional baggage.
Ever see the film where two astronauts get into and argument at a Martian cliff's edge and one winds up pushing the other into the chasm?

I think a joint effort will be the best bet for a new series of Lunar exploration endeavors.
As for Iraq, If those fundamentalist muslims don't cut back drastically on the terrorism, car bombings, etc. SOMEBODY SOMEDAY is going to get their feathers ruffled enough to just turn the whole place into radioactive glass. Add lead shielding to the pipelines and we have an instant candidate for a 51st state - population: 23-no chance of a tie in any vote, in lead-lined suits, of course, (to run the pumps, refineries, etc).

Moon phases
[ 2 Answers ]
I always thought the different 'phases' of the moon was caused by the earth's shadow on it. This made sense when looking at the 1st quarter, but as the moon 'gets bigger' the visible part is no longer crecent shaped. Where am I going wrong in my thinking?
