Learning about art
Hello everybody, I would like to ask anybody who paints in oils before you dip your brush into the oil paint, should the brush no matter what size be dry or we say damp with thinners. Please help.

I have used oil paint a lot in my work, You can use it either way. If you like it to be thick to create texture, use it as it is. If you wish to use it thinned down like a water colour effect, use white spirit. I think it's more fun to use it as it is really, I love to see texture in my work personally.
This is the good thing about oil paint, you can choose how thick/thinned you want to use it.
Hope this helps :)

I think that what the shape of the brush is does make a difference as to whether you have it prepared in some sort of solvent (thinner) first. What shape of brush or brushes is it about which you are asking?
My own personal preference would be, that no matter what the shape or size of the brush used to paint with oils, is that the bristles already be conditioned with some kind of solvent because I like my lines to be crisp and clean. But, that is a matter of personal preference. I do like the answer that was given by clafairey above, by the way.

I love painting with oil, acrylic, and watercolor. My advice would be to experiment, relax have fun and enjoy. Try it dry, then try it thinned. You can work on an abstract to experience what you like. Who knows, it might be your favorite piece ever!
