I have a Whirpool Gold Model #gsx9885jq0 washing machine which is about 8 years old. It has had only minor issues to date, softener and bleach reservoirs don't work, and the water line that adds water in the middle of the cycle has come undone many times leaking a few cups of water on the floor.
Anyway, the current problem is much more serious, when a load is started, everything seems normal, but when the tank is filled, the motor simply doesn't turn on. The timer counts down, and when it gets to 0 (I assume I didn't actually wait 30 minutes watching nothing happen) the code Ld is displayed on the screen. The water doesn't drain, and after a long time, the machine finally turns off still with a full tank of water.
I siphoned the water out and I am ready to decide whether to:
1. attempt to fix on my own,
2. Hire a pro, or
3. Just get a new machine.
I would say if I can get the parts to fix it myself for under $100 I would like to go that route, if I hire a pro I would want to spend no more than $250. Otherwise I would just bite the bullet and get a new machine, but never another Whirlpool, it has been nothing but trouble.

It could be the timer contacts,motor relay,or the motor itself. It could also be the signal from the fill level control. You would have to have knowledge of how the machine worked,wiring diagram, and the knowledge of how to use a electric meter and tools to find out exactly what the problem is to start with. All this work has to be performed on site since any other info I would give you would be just a guess on this end. Never replace parts unless they are proven defective.

There is nothing wrong with Whirlpool, in fact they manufacture for a lot of other companies, who just put their brand name on the machine. Kenmore, Roper, and Kitchen-Aid are only a few to mention.
The problem is the new machines and the inferior quality of parts that are used. The new "computer controlled" ones are even worse. Just the computer control alone costs around $200 to replace! If you hire a professional they will charge you around $100 just to walk in your door.
There are quite a few on-line sites that specialize in appliances. You can find a diagram of your machine and there are professionals that will answer your questions. Just run a search: "free appliance repair advice".
I got a lot of info but ended up going local to a small appliance shop. The guy was friendly and helpful, and knew his business. He ordered the right parts and they came the next day.
I have an older machine without all the "gadgets" and I put in a new tub seal and drive block. At the same time I cleaned up the machine and inspected everything, so I consider that I have a reconditioned machine that will last quite a long time and parts are a lot cheaper. I spent less than $40 total for: parts, shipping, and other misc, ( spray lube, steel wool, and plumber's grease).
If I do buy another machine it won't be one with a computer but it will be a front loader as they use about 1/4 the amount of water and are easier on your clothes.
Meanwhile my washer works fine, and I rarely use the dryer.
