    Metal shavings in ice
I have an 8 year old Amana bottom freezer with an ice maker. The ice maker itself seems to be covered with a paper-like substance that is coming off the metal. It's beige and I thought it might be mineral build up and was not concerned. Now, however, I'm seeing bits of metal in the ice drawer and in the ice. Where the "paper" has come off the metal is covered with a powdery feeling residue. I have well water (that is softened) but also use an R/O system to filter the water before it hits the icemaker.
My owner's manual is not helpful at all. Any clues what is going on?

It sounds like your water is corrosive. You can test ph, and tds. Those are your first 2 things to check. If you send me a sample of your water, I can tell you the results. If you go that route, I'll ask for a sample of your water at the well before treatment, And, a sample of your water out of the RO.

Or, you can pick up some test kits and do it yourself.

    Let us know.

Thanks, I'll try to get samples to my county extension office as it might be easier all around.
