    I have a maytag performa.
Its lid is held by two clips that you have to press on with a flat screw driver while pulling up on the lid.

The agitatator has a bolt under the fabric softener despenser that you remove. The agitator lifts right out. Is yours not built like this?

Are the clips under and behind the lid in front? Mine has no bolt under the frabric dispenser. Does it just pull up?

On mine, the clips are on the front, you press on them with a flat screw driver while raising the lid. It opens like a car hood.

The fabric softener cup just pops off. You will find a bolt way down by the cone, inside the agitator, remove that bolt and the agitator should slide right off, assuming most maytags are made the same.

EDIT: Okay, I just re-read your question, aparently, you didn't find a bolt under your fabric softener cup. Unless its buried under some muck, something has to hold the agitator down. Let me check, its been a while since I pulled mine. BRB.

Yup, on mine, the bolt is at the base of the worm part of the agitator.
Now your washer may vary. But Im sure there has got to be a simple way to remove it.
The clips are on the front of the machine. There is two of them.
