    Continuity testing single element water heater tstat
    Everywhere Ive search online they show you how to test a dual element upper and lower water heater tstat I was wondering the way to test a single element water heater tstat

    Most single element water heaters are 120 Volt and have a smaller tank than normal. If this is the case you will have to check to see if 120 volts is at the element. If it is then it is possible the element is defective if no power at element you will have to trace the circuit back until you find the defective part. (usually the overload/temperature adjustment thermostat. Above all make sure the circuit breaker is on and power is being supplied to the initial water heater connections area.

    With power off, disconnect the lead going through the thermostat at the heating element. Check for continuity between input terminal of thermostat and the disconnected element wire. If defective thermostat will not show continuity. Check for continuity between terminals of heating elements. A good element will show continuity, amount of resistance will depend on wattage of heating element. A defective element will not show continuity.
