I am 5 1/2 month pregnant can I drink a supplement drink to help me sleep?
The ingrediants are valerian root extract, lemon balm extract, chamomile flower extract, rhizome, passion flower extract and melatonin. My uncle gave it to me to help me sleep and I just need to know if its safe.

Sounds good, likely better than medication or drugs.
I would Google each ingrediant and "Pregnancy".
    See what shows up.

My wife had issues sleeping and she was prescribed an OTC medication that was suppose to be OK for pregnant women.

Whenever you have questions about pregnancy please consult a physician. I am not saying that we here at AMHD don't know but there are many variables in offering a simple yes or no. Are there past health issues, complications, etc...

What I am trying to say is your best option and safest option is to consult your physician.

There is not enough evidence to prove or disprove the safety of valerian root during pregnancy. Always err on the side of caution and avoid this particular herb during pregnancy.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding moms should avoind lemon balm extract.

Chamomile flower extract should be avoided at all costs and is NOT safe during pregnancy as it can cause uterine contractions and result in preterm labor and delivery. Passion flower and chamomile flower are the same thing.

In the end, you should avoid this "supplement" like the plague during pregnancy. If you are having problems sleeping, consult your OB for proper supplements to aid in sleep.

Sorry to contradict, but in the interests of accuracy, passion flower and chamomile are not the same nor do they belong to the same genus.

BBC - Gardening: Plant Finder - Passion flower

Anthemis nobilis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However, neither are safe during pregnancy.

Please don't be sorry to contradict. Discussions like this are helpful.

Unfortunately I cannot get to my sources here at home. I was at work last night and was able to look up scholarly articles on the subject. It was also very late for me, so I could very well have confused the two while reading.

With that said, thank you for the sources you provided QLP, but remember that WIKI is not considered a reliable source. ;)

Should be avoided at all costs during pregnancy as it causes uterine stimulation and can cause premature labor and delivery.

In the interests of being thourough, and of taking on board your comment about wiki, J9:

    Chamomile - New World Encyclopedia

    http://www.chinese-herbs.org/chamomile/

It is worth pointing out that both Roman chamomile and German chamomile are used in herbal preparations. It would be necessary to read the packet or consult the manufacturer to determine exactly which is used in anything you buy. However, both should still be avoided in pregnancy.

As a gardener as well as someone with an interest in herbal medicine I was already familiar with these plants so perhaps didn't put as much thought as I could into sourcing information. I have better information in books of my own but couldn't see how to use that on site.

Will bear in mind to avoid wiki in future for reference. Is the new world enclyclopedia considered a better source than wiki? I must confess I don't know. I tend to only link to articles I already know are true in my own mind from other sources anyway, but find it hard to know what to use on site, as much of my own information is in books.

    Mmm?
