    Lost luggage
The airlines lost luggage on a flight. The customer was smart enough to keep all the receipts since the items were new. The airline told her there was a $3,400 recovery limit and the articles were appraised at the fair market value .

But what if a person loses older articles , how do you determine the fair market value? Should you at least make a list of the articles before you travel?

most airlines have a limit per bag on what they will pay. But yes, photos of items and lists of the items.
But things like used clothes will have little actual value

But a list is good, brand names and so on. If you have valuable items, consider additional insurance for bags. I have had many bags over the years disapper.

But also, keep name and address and phone number, also inside of the bag, even fixed to inside wall.
