Is the nature of spring force similar to the tension offered by a string?

They are usually not considered to behave the same I physics problems. Strings are usually thought of inextensable, simply conveying a tensile force to whatever it is attached to. And strings can not sustain compressive forces. Springs are usually considered to stretch or compress under tension or compression, respectively.
